SPOKANE COMMUNITY HONORED FOR LIVING FIREWISE

Washington, D.C. -- A developing community north of Spokane, Washington, has been honored for its work to make structures and landscapes more resistant to wildfire.
According to Judith Leraas Cook, manager of the Firewise Communities/USA Project, the National Firewise Program is honoring a dozen US communities (see attached) including a new 2,000-acre, gated community in northern Spokane called River Bluff Ranch that's being designed using Firewise construction and landscaping techniques.   "The developer of River Bluff Ranch has proven his commitment to minimizing wildfire risks and hazards," says Leraas Cook. "Before construction even began, he worked with representatives from the Washington State Forest Stewardship Program to remove hazardous fuels from around the development. Development covenants require fire-resistant roofing and maintenance of defensible space around structures. And the homeowner's association will be responsible for educating homeowners about the principles of Firewise living."
Chris Heftel from River Bluff and other Firewise Communities representatives were honored for their Firewise commitment during the 2002 National Roundtable on the Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI), held November 7th in Washington D.C. The Roundtable is sponsored annually by the WUI Working Team of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) to foster new partnerships and awareness of programs and policies for combating wildfire in residential areas.
The NWCG WUI Working Team also sponsors the Firewise Program and the Firewise Communities/USA project, which is being managed in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters.
